Book Club Vol.1: Tuesdays with Morrie
I haven’t written in a while. I have been busy with work but alas I am over that.
I read Tuesdays with Morrie recently. It was recommended by my boyfriend who isn’t known to read. I thought ‘it must be good if he has sat through it’ so I gave it a whirl & this is what I took from it.
We are too close to our own situation to really see it. We could use an outside perspective: friends, mentors, teachers. You’re never too old to have a teacher.
“We don’t get into the habit of standing back & looking at our lives & saying, is this all? Is this all I want? Is something missing? You need someone to probe you in that direction. It won’t just happen automatically.
“Do the kinds of things that come from the heart. When you do, you won’t be dissatisfied, you won’t be envious, you won’t be longing for somebody else’s things. On the contrary, you’ll be overwhelmed with what comes back.”
Our days are full, yet we remain unsatisfied. Why?
“Well, for one thing, the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. We’re teaching the wrong things. & you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn’t work, don’t buy it. Create your own.
“Devote yourself to your community around you, & devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose & meaning. “
“In addition to all the miseries, the young are not wise. They have very little understanding about life.”
“Aging is not just decay, you know. It’s growth. It’s more than the negative that you’re going to die. it’s also the positive that you understand you are going to die, & that you live a better life because of it.
“Why do people always say ‘oh, if I were young again.’ You never hear people say, “I wish I were 65.”
“You know what that reflects? Unsatisfied lives. Unfulfilled lives. Lives that haven’t found meaning. Because if you’ve found meaning in your life, you don’t want to go back. You want to go forward. You want to see more, do more. You can’t wait until 65.”
These are just some of the bullet points I took from the book. There are many MANY other important ones but I will let you discover those for yourself. As for my next read, I am currently reading sweep by Cate Tiernan for my fiction needs, Arabian nights, & Love is a dog from hell for my poetry needs.

Did I mention that I started my own online business. It’s a store on this website. I’m sharing my books, selling journals that I uncovered from the deepest trenches of antique stores and garage sales, also Literature inspired fashions because who doesn’t enjoy dressing up as their favorite character from time to time.
